When you look at going on a detox diet plan, there are a lot of strategies you can choose from. Phil and I have tried many different cleanses, although we didn’t always see them as cleanses at the time.

Some of these diets can be good as a cleanse and also long term to maintain health, while others are best kept in their place as a shorter term cleanse. The more changes you make to go on a detox diet plan, the more changes you will see in yourself as a result. That doesn’t mean drastic changes are necessary, though – even mild changes will give you mild results.

Simplify Your Diet

Even for just a short period of time, simplifying your diet can have various benefits as a cleanse. Stick to fresh vegetables (slightly cooked by steaming or baking or just raw), fruits, wholes grains (sprouted or cooked), sprouted or raw seeds, and legumes (sprouted and cooked).

Avoid baked goods, bread and nuts as well as mixing too many different kinds of foods together, like proteins with fats and starches, or fruits with everything but leafy greens.

Vegan Diet Plan

A vegan diet plan can also make an excellent detox, however, it still need to follow certain rules like eliminating refined and processed foods. Majority of those unhealthy foods are vegan, but are still pretty toxic to your body. As a cleanse, focus on having fresh fruits and vegetables. If you already have a vegetarian diet plan, try to avoid dairy even just for a few days or a week.

You can be amazed at the lightness you will feel and the symptoms you can remove by taking a short break from dairy.

Mono-diet

Mono-diet is generally used to refer to a diet of eating strictly one type of food all day. Lots of people have mono-diet in macrobiotic way, just sticking only to brown rice, and sometimes with some vegetables or miso soups.

Raw Food

You could also detox with just all raw foods, or all fruits, or even all green vegetables. These are not precisely mono-diets, but it follows the same principle of intensely simplifying the diet. Raw foods involves eating plenty of fresh produce, nuts, legumes and raw/or sprouted seeds.

Liquid Diet

Some people take a detox approach of having only liquid foods, like smoothies all day, or lots of pureed vegetable soup. These are slightly different than a juice fast, since you’re getting the fiber and bulk of the whole foods.

Alkalinity

One thing that these detox diet plans have in common is that they focus on foods that are alkalizing to the body. Since a Western diet is high in acidifying foods (dairy, meat, grains), it makes sense that our most popular detoxes involve reducing that acidity. Alkalinity in foods happens to coincide with the foods that are most detoxifying and least congesting.

The most essential point in following a detox diet plan is to set your own rules beforehand, whatever the detox plan you decide to choose. It helps you stick to the entire process so much easier, since you don’t have to think about the entire details – whether or not to eat this or that. You should still stick with the rule though, wait for your stomach protest hunger before you eat, since it means that it’s now ready to digest more foods.
